Materials Buyer


The Materials Buyer is part of the team responsible for ordering and maintaining bar stock, raw materials and supplies; working diligently to identify and explore opportunities that will reduce material costs through price negotiations and sourcing. The Materials Buyer is viewed as the subject matter expert for Boston Centerless products and is responsible for providing answers to questions related to materials and pricing, as well as deliver timely responses to quote requests. Success in this position will be demonstrated by achieving sales metrics and profitability efforts of the organization.


  • Maintains strong business relationships with suppliers to ensure best delivery and pricing options
  • Manage the purchasing of raw materials to best meet the overall buying strategy
  • Determine order sizes to balance pricing, inventory levels, and availability
  • Manage open and past due purchase orders
  • Work with suppliers to establish standard lead times, expedited delivery schedules, tier pricing for volume or special purchases
  • Maintain supplier performance data including delivery, lead time, quality and certifications
  • Maintain real time delivery of small lot and special order materials
  • Manage inventory planning and reduction programs
  • Coordinate third party services for materials prior to releasing to manufacturing
  • Learn current suppliers and contracts; identify potential new suppliers


  • College degree in Business, preferred
  • 1-3 years of experience in manufacturing, materials management, sourcing, and inventory control
  • Working knowledge of the metals industry and specific products related to the business, preferred
  • Expertise in MS Office Suite, especially Excel, is required
  • 1-3 years of project management, planning and resource allocation experience required
  • ISO and lean manufacturing practices
